A Legacy of Faith and Art

Interior of Sant'Angelo Church

Sant'Angelo and Santa Maria degli Angeli: A Dual Heritage

This church embodies Milan's rich spiritual and artistic history. A fusion of Mannerist design and centuries of faith, it's a key part of Milan's Franciscan story, linked to Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi.

A Historical Journey

  1. 1280

    The First Chapel

A small chapel, Sant'Angelo, stood between Porta Nuova and Porta Garibaldi, near the Naviglio Martesana.

  2. 1421

    St. Bernardino's Vision

The chapel was entrusted to St. Bernardino da Siena to create a monastery for his order.

  3. 1552

    A New Beginning

Construction of the current church began under Governor Ferrante Gonzaga. Domenico Giunti designed it, with frescoes by leading artists like Peterzano, Vincenzo Campi, the Procaccinis, Moncalvo, Morazzone, and Legnanino.

  4. 1810

    A Time of Change

Napoleon I's decree closed the monastery, but the church remained open, cared for by a few friars.
